Anyone who has gone on a study abroad will tell you that it was an irreplaceable experience, that it changed their lives. I believed these people but didn’t fully understand this until attending the Pratt in Venice program.

Pratt in Venice has had an exhilarating summer and fall preparing for the 34th annual Pratt in Venice exhibition! Unveiling the latest artwork by our students in Pratt Institute’s East Hall Gallery this past Monday, the opening reception was a whirlwind of celebration and excitement for the Pratt in Venice program. We were very proud to show our 2018 cohort’s fabulous accomplishments. Works on display included paintings, prints, mixed media, textile-based art, 3D modeling, glasswork, posters showcasing student art historical research—and even a hand-forged sword!
The night was a huge success! The opening reception was crowded and bustling with attendees, including Pratt Institute President Frances Bronet, numerous alumni/ae of the Pratt in Venice program, practicing artists, interested students, faculty, administrators, friends, family, and supporters.
The work this year was so strong that the exhibition has been extended to be open an additional week, until Friday, October 27th, so that more people can experience the pieces.
Be sure to swing by Pratt Institute and see the amazing artwork now on view in the East Hall Gallery. While you’re in the gallery, be sure to participate in our silent auction of select student work exclusively to benefit the Pratt in Venice Scholarship Fund!

PiV Alumna Cynthia Brenwall writes new book on Central Park
Pratt in Venice alumna, Cynthia S. Brenwall (PiV ‘07), has written a book, The Central Park: Original Designs for New York’s Greatest Treasure.
Monique Rollins, Alumna of PIV, visits Venice in July!
Pratt in Venice was honored to have a visit from an alumna of the program, Monique Rollins (PiV ‘04), back in July! During our class tour of the Baroque church, Santa Maria della Salute, Monique came by to say hello and revisit one of Venice’s most iconic monuments with us. Afterwards, she joined Diana Gisolfi, director of Pratt in Venice, for an aperitivo in order to catch up!
After Monique attended Pratt in Venice as a student in 2004, she returned to the program as Diana’s on-site assistant in 2007. In 2005, Monique graduated with an M.F.A. in Painting from Pratt Institute. She pursued her education further at Pratt, receiving an M.S. in History of Art and Design in 2006.
Monique is now a successful artist, working between New York City and Florence, Italy. She recently had an exhibition in Beijing at the Zhu Naizheng Research Center of Art.
We love having visits from alumni of the program, especially in Venice!

Pratt in Venice Professor Joseph Kopta to Chair Panel on Venice and Byzantium at ICMS
Pratt in Venice Professor Joseph Kopta will co-chair the double session, “Venice, Materiality, and the Byzantine World” at the 53rd International Congress on Medieval Studies, May 10–13, 2018, at the Medieval Institute of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Dear Pratt in Venice alumni/ae,
I am writing to ask your support of our Pratt in Venice Scholarship Fund, ideally before December 31, as donations are tax deductible at present!
As tuition rates increase, it is especially challenging for many extremely well qualified applicants to Pratt in Venice to afford the program. I am speaking of students in art history, fine arts, preservation and design who are serious about wishing to participate.

As students ask me about Pratt in Venice 2018, many of their questions center on cost and the availability of substantial scholarship help. In past years, through your generosity, we have been able to give $2000 or even $3000 to outstanding scholarship applicants. Such students have been highly committed productive participants on site. We need to be even more generous in the coming year.
To bring you up to date: 2017 was a very successful year with an excellent mix of graduate and undergraduate students. It proved a highly compatible group as well. Mario Naves and Grayson Cox organized an engaging Biennale visit in which students presented information about lead artists at selected pavilions. For the upcoming architectural Biennale, alumna Margaret Matz is coordinating an ambitious project that combines historical reconstruction and new installation in the surviving spaces of two ancient scuole. Among her several collaborators are current Pratt students and other Pratt in Venice alumni. Art historical events included Joe Kopta’s Ravenna visit, the ever wonderful villas-and-Bassano day, our Peggy Guggenheim visit led by Andrew Kurczak, and new revelations from conservators at San Sebastiano (the only ones not reported in my book that came out this year!).
